Water Voles
Did you know that “Ratty” in “The Wind in the the Willows” wasn’t actually a rat but a water vole!
Although water voles are sometimes called water rats, they are not really rats. If you are fortunate enough to see one, you’ll see they have much rounder noses as well as chubby faces and brown fur. They need our help and protection to survive as they are classified as one of the UK’s “most threatened” species.
What you can do to help Water Voles
Write to our local MP, Danny Chambers, tell him how important nature recovery is to you. Tell him to continue to support and promote the Climate and Nature Bill, this landmark bill aims to reverse the damage done to nature to species like the Water Vole. Click here to send Danny a secure message.
Sewage pumped into our rivers by falling water companies, such as Southern Water, is putting all river wildlife in danger. Join campaigns such as Surfers Against Sewage to make a difference.
If you own land with any waterways on it there are things you can do to restore habitats for wildlife. You can find out more regarding habitats for Water Voles from the People’s Trust for Endangered Species here.
