Shining a Light on Christmas Consumerism

Extinction Rebellion Winchester (XRW) illuminated the Cathedral Close on Friday 19th Decembe with striking projected messages, reminding festive shoppers of the environmental impact of Christmas consumerism.

Using a projector, the group displayed thought‑provoking facts such as:

“Each year, the UK throws away £42 million of unwanted presents. They end up in landfill.”

“50,000 trees are cut down annually in the UK for wrapping paper.”

At a time when families are facing both a cost‑of‑living crisis and a climate emergency, XRW encouraged people to consider alternative ways of spreading joy during the festive season. Giving time and shared experiences can be more meaningful than material gifts, while also saving money and protecting precious resources.

Mike Nell, spokesperson for Winchester XR, explained:

“Boundless consumerism is eating up the planet.  The Christmas Market is a wonderful way to support the local economy, but unchecked consumption is one of the greatest contributing factors to the climate crisis. We want to remind people that the most precious gift at Christmas is time with loved ones.”

Extinction Rebellion Winchester extends warm wishes to the community for a peaceful, joyful, and healthy Christmas. The group hopes their message will inspire residents to cherish the earth by buying less and celebrating more sustainably.
